First graders prepare to plant sunflowers

Here are a few pictures of Ms. Smith’s first grade class, working in Ms. Giesel’s sunflower garden on Earth Day, April 22. The students tilled the soil in order to plant the seeds this week. The sunflowers will come up this summer and will be in full bloom when students return to school in August. The biggest sunflower gets displayed at the Kentucky State Fair each year. Ms. Giesel sent home sunflower seeds with all grades over the past few weeks, and those seeds were harvested from last year’s crop.

First grade students learn about India

Students in Diane Brey’s first grade class enjoyed a special presentation on India when KCD parent Vinod Solankhi visited their class yesterday.

Ms. Solankhi, along with her mother and sister from Toronto, showed students the Indian way to dress, and each child received a jewel for their forehead. Children were also able to sample Indian food.

Ms. Solankhi’s visit is part of a lower school diversity initiative that welcomes parents into the classroom to share their cultural backgrounds with students.

First graders create books about winter

First graders in Ms. Gatewood’s computer classes recently completed a project in which they used RealeBooks software to create a book about winter. On each page, students responded to a writing prompt and added a picture on the opposite page. Books from each first grade class are posted online here (scroll down to see the first grade books).

First and second grade students enjoy string quartet

A string quartet from the Louisville Orchestra visited KCD on Monday January 11 to perform in an assembly for first and second grade students. This assembly served as a wonderful preview of the orchestra's OrKidstra Concert on Saturday, January 16. In addition to individual visits to the second grade classrooms, the members of the string quartet highlighted a variety of pieces to be played by the full orchestra. Louisville Orchestra Education Director, Deborah Moore, also used engaging movement exercises and games to direct the listening of our wonderful young audience members. One hundred sixty KCD parents and children will join Ms. LuAnn Hayes for a family field trip to Saturday's OrKidstra Concert at the Brown Theatre.

First grade visits Joe Huber’s Farm

On October 13, the first grade class took a field trip to Joe Huber’s Family Farm & Restaurant. A tour guide provided an Educational tractor and wagon ride through the pasture of farm animals and around the farm. The students learned the history and many interesting facts about the family, the farm, and the restaurant.

While on the farm the students also enjoyed playing on a giant slide, searching their way through a corn maze, petting some of the farm animals, and receiving apples from the apple orchard.
