Admission Criteria

List of 2 items.

  • Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten

Students applying to Junior Kindergarten or Kindergarten must turn four or five, respectively, prior to June 1 of their year of admittance. Applications of children with birthdays very close to the age cut-off may be accepted, but younger applicants must show an appropriate developmental, social, and academic readiness profile in order to be accepted into either level.
The admission process identifies students who demonstrate the motivation and ability to fulfill our academic and social requirements. The KCD Admission Committee will evaluate all applicants on the following criteria:
    1. Developmental age determined by the KCD Office of Admission
    2. Observations made by faculty during the prospective student’s classroom visit
    3. Written, confidential teacher recommendation from current preschool
    4. Compatibility of student and the student’s family with our school mission
    5. Contribution to the best possible balance in classroom, grade level, and division
When grade levels approach optimum numbers, preference is given to applicants who are siblings of other KCD students, children of active alumni, and faculty children.

Students are admitted on a yearly basis. At the midway point of the second trimester, all students in good academic and social standing will be invited to re-enroll for the following school year.
  • Grades 1–12

All applicants for grades 1–12 will be evaluated on the following criteria:
    1. Previous academic achievement and conduct
    2. Standardized test scores
    3. Observations made by faculty during the prospective student’s classroom visit
    4. One written confidential teacher recommendation from the prospective student’s current primary classroom teacher (grades 1–6)
    5. Two written confidential teacher recommendations from the prospective student’s current teachers (mathematics or English) (grades 7–12);
    6. Community achievements, involvement, awards, and honors
    7. Compatibility of the student and student’s family with KCD’s mission and values
    8. Contribution to the best possible balance in classroom, grade level, and division
When grade levels approach optimum numbers, preference is given to applicants who are siblings, children of alumni, and children of faculty. KCD’s acceptance of any student is contingent upon the successful completion of the applicant’s current grade.

Students are admitted on a yearly basis, and at the midway point of the second trimester, all students who are in good standing both academically and socially will be invited to re-enroll for the following school year.
KCD firmly supports the principle that the admission of students, the employment of staff, the operations of the program, and the governance of the school be open to all who are qualified, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, age, disability, or any other categories protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.
