Students in beginning Ceramics are introduced to the basic clay processes (coil, pinch, etc.), slab construction methods, and pottery wheel throwing. Through their work with the material, students develop an understanding of the shrinkage and drying of clays and techniques to control them. They also learn the difference between glazes and underglazes as well as the difference between low fire and high fire work. All students must be able to work constructively in the studio and will receive thorough instruction in the use of tools available to them. An opportunity to fire in instructor's gas  kiln as well as the school's electric kilns will also be offered.
