Orchestra Director

Kentucky Country Day School is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and innovative Strings/Orchestra teacher for the 2024-25 school year. Collaboration within a dynamic JK-12 Fine Arts Department, commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of students, setting a positive tone, and mastery of at least one stringed instrument, are all critical components of this position. The ideal candidate creates and maintains an atmosphere of inclusion where students and faculty from all backgrounds are welcomed and celebrated in the areas of performing arts. An excellent teacher, conductor, and musician, this full-time member of the KCD community teaches a wide variety of ages including beginning strings at the Lower School, intermediate and advanced string ensembles at the Middle School, and an Upper School Orchestra.

The Orchestra Director is responsible for leading, directing, and providing artistic vision for the strings curriculum and orchestral performances across all divisions of the school. The Orchestra Director works closely with all performing arts faculty members, the Chair of Fine Arts, and other school leadership to ensure strong, cooperative relationships and high artistic standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct Lower School Strings, Middle and Upper School intermediate, and advanced orchestras
  • Work with Fine Arts Department Chair on maintaining and updating curriculum
  • Work with students on an individual basis (as needed) outside of class
  • Prepare students for at least two annual concerts, in addition to other performance opportunities (Assemblies, Admissions Open House, Graduation)
  • Provide regular feedback (written and verbal) to both students and parents
  • Update course pages and electronic grade books regularly
  • Serve as an academic advisor
  • Prepare progress reports and meet with parents for conferences
  • Collaborate with other departments on cross-curricular connections
  • Support the KCD mission & statement of inclusion
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music or a related field with expertise in string pedagogy required. Masters preferred.
  • Two or more years’ experience teaching string ensembles preferred.
  • Must possess an enthusiasm for teaching students at a range of age and ability levels, and work with students who enjoy varied interests within the school community is a necessity.
  • Must value a highly collaborative, culturally responsive approach to teaching and learning, a growth mindset, and a good sense of humor.
