Head of School Search for Kentucky Country Day School
Kentucky Country Day School announces new Head of School
The Kentucky Country Day School Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Deena J. Carey as KCD’s new Head of School, effective July 1, 2025.
Through the late spring and summer, our consultants from The Education Group (TEG) have been cultivating a pool of qualified candidates for KCD’s next Head of School. TEG has interviewed many candidates, checked selected references for each, and presented a slate of candidates to the Search Committee. The members of the Search Committee will review the candidates’ materials and narrow the slate to a group of semi-finalists who will be interviewed via Zoom. After those interviews, the committee will select finalists who will be invited to visit KCD’s campus.
There are a number of standard avenues to find candidates. The position profile is listed on KCD’s and TEG’s websites. Our accrediting agency, The Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), has the listing, as does The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). A publication called The Blue Sheet is a national clearinghouse for head of school openings. In addition, consultants emailed and called more than 200 professional contacts to solicit recommendations. TEG also contacted numerous potential candidates named in the community survey.
The Board is ultimately responsible for hiring and evaluating the Head of School. The Search Committee has been actively engaged in the process from the start and has invested considerable time in getting to know the candidates. The Search Committee will recommend one candidate to the Board, who will receive the recommendation, ask questions of the Search Committee Co-Chairs, and ultimately decide whether to offer the position to the recommended candidate.
At the beginning of the search process, all constituents were invited to participate in a community-wide survey that informed the Search Committee and TEG on the type of Head who would be best for KCD. In addition, TEG consultants were on campus for two days in April, and met with anyone who attended an in-person session. When finalists visit the campus this fall, open meetings will be held where parents, faculty, administrators, and others will have the opportunity to meet the candidates and ask them questions. Following each visit, anyone who met with a candidate will be invited to complete a post-visit survey that will inform the Search Committee.
Unfortunately, no. Our consultants advise that in-person only meetings are the norm for finalist visits. We recognize that this is a challenge for some. We have provided two options for parents to meet with each candidate with the hope that at least one session will fit within their busy schedules.
The timing of the search depends on several factors including the candidates’ availability to visit—realizing that many candidates have opening of school responsibilities in their current roles. We expect visits to take place by the end of September or mid-October. In any event, we hope to have the process concluded by late fall. This will enable the Head-elect to make visits to Louisville, transition from his or her current position, secure housing, and get to know the school before the start date of July 1, 2025.
