Citizen, Scholar, Steward
At Kentucky Country Day School, we believe that the fine arts enrich the lives and academic experience of all our students. At every grade level, students participate in fine arts classes that encourage them to exercise their imagination and creativity while
  • mastering fundamental skills, tools, and techniques from a range of disciplines;
  • learning to appreciate and think critically about art from a variety of times and cultures;
  • understanding connections between the arts and other academic subjects;
  • nurturing a lifelong love of creativity and self-expression.
Fine arts instruction begins with visual art and music in the Lower School, then expands in the Middle and Upper Schools to include classes in drama as well as choral and instrumental music. The middle and upper school arts program also offers students a diverse and exciting set of electives.

The arts are an important part of our STEAM program, which connects art & design to science, technology, engineering, and math.

Fine Arts Mentor Program

The KCD Fine Arts Mentor Program is a unique initiative at Kentucky Country Day School that seeks to pair young artists in grades 10 through 12 with a member of the KCD Fine Arts faculty member who will advise and mentor them through the process of audition preparation and portfolio building for summer development opportunities, the KY Governor’s School for the Arts and for college applications.

Fine Arts mentors work closely with the upper school college counseling team to help students pinpoint programs of interest, identify scholarship opportunities, understand program application requirements, and ultimately, build an impressive portfolio that supports a strong application to competitive programs.

As such, the program's mission is to actively
  • identify students who are considering careers in the arts
  • advise students appropriately when it comes to selecting US classes
  • inform students of the steps they should be taking in upper school to adequately prepare for a college application (GSA, portfolio building, summer programs, program-specific pre-screeing requirements).
If you are interested in learning more about the KCD Fine Arts Mentor program or would like to be paired with a faculty mentor, please email Sarah Stone, the Chair of KCD Fine Arts at sarah.stone@kcd.org.
