VEX Robotics team qualifies for Worlds

On Saturday, March 8, KCD Robotics Team members Shaan Bains ’25, Derock Xie ’25, Bright Zheng ’25, and Yunis Kutmah ’25, also known as Gearcat 3, competed in the Kentucky VEX State Championship at Martha Lane Collins High School in Shelbyville.
A VEX Robotics tournament is a competitive event where student teams design, build, and program robots to complete specific challenges in an arena. These events test their skills in engineering, coding, teamwork, and problem-solving, with points earned by performing tasks such as scoring game elements, completing autonomous routines, and collaborating with alliances. VEX tournaments promote STEM education and foster innovation, creativity, and collaboration among participants.

Gearcat 3 qualified for the State Championship by excelling at the Tech Bridge Tournament in Cecilia, KY. At the State Championships, they posted one of the top Skills runs in Kentucky, earning them an invitation to the prestigious VEX World Championship in Dallas, TX, from May 6-9.

This is a rare and remarkable achievement! Gearcat 3 is likely one of only a handful of teams in Louisville and fewer than 10 in Kentucky to qualify for this highly coveted event.

The Gearcat 3 team was also awarded the Judges Award at the State Championship.  This is presented to a team that stands out for reasons beyond the standard award criteria. This includes exemplary effort, team dynamics, perseverance, and unique accomplishments that impress the judges. It recognizes qualities or achievements that may not fit into other specific categories but demonstrate excellence and innovation.

Way to go, Bearcats!
